School History
The current Takoma Park Elementary School (TPES) building was built in 1979. Takoma Park Elementary School began as a K-6 school. When Piney Branch Elementary School opened with grades 5 and 6, students from TPES began attending. In the following years TPES would become a K-4 school. As the Piney Branch Elementary School building developed, TPES became a K-3 school. To date Takoma Park Elementary School is a K-2 school which also houses Head Start and School Community Based Classes. Takoma Park Elementary School is also the only primary Gifted and Talented magnet program in Montgomery County Public Schools. Since the 2001-2002 school year Takoma Park Elementary School's has had a student-teacher ratios of 17:1. Beginning in the 2002-2003 school year TPES will have all day kindergarten with student-teacher ratios in kindergarten at 15:1.
