School Information

Absences
Parents are requested to call the school by 9:15am if their child is not going to attend school that day. The office hours are from 8:00am to 4:30pm. When your child returns to school, Maryland state law dictates that he/she must provide a note signed by your specifying the reason for the absences.

Student Arrivals
Students may not arrive at school before 8:50 am, unless eating breakfast. When students arrive they wait in the All Purpose Room until their teachers pick them up. If you drive your child to school, please come through the parking lot to the crossing area. A staff member will greet your child and help them from the car. (TPES Kiss n' Ride!) Please do not drive through or stop in the entrance to the bus lane or the parking lot. This is not safe for your children.

The current Takoma Park Elementary School (TPES) building was built in 1979. Takoma Park Elementary School began as a K-6 school. When Piney Branch Elementary School opened with grades 5 and 6, students from TPES began attending. In the following years TPES would become a K-4 school. As the Piney Branch Elementary School building developed, TPES became a K-3 school. To date Takoma Park Elementary School is a K-2 school which also houses Head Start and School Community Based Classes. Takoma Park Elementary School is also the only primary Gifted and Talented magnet program in Montgomery County Public Schools. Since the 2001-2002 school year Takoma Park Elementary School's has had a student-teacher ratios of 17:1. Beginning in the 2002-2003 school year TPES will have all day kindergarten with student-teacher ratios in kindergarten at 15:1.
