Working With Your Partner You will be assigned a partner by the teacher. During your first meeting, you must both:
1. Read about TV Turnoff Week
2. Preview the selections on the Resources page and choose two for each of you to read. (You must each choose at least one selection from the ANTI-TV list and at least one selection from the PRO-TV list. Be sure to choose selections that seem to be on your reading level.)
Reading Your Selections
1. Get a copy of the graphic organizer from your teacher.
2. As you read the selections complete the organizer so that you have a full understanding of the gist of the articles.
Choosing Your Position

1. Share your completed graphic organizers with your partner.
2. Use the information you learned to decide your point of view. Do you support the school’s participation in National TV Turnoff Week or are you against it?
3. Start using the articles you read to find proof that supports your position. You may even want to look at other resources you haven’t yet read.
Completing Your Graphic Organizer and Slide Show
1. After you've chosen whether you are for or against TV Turn-off Week, open a blank page in Microsoft Word and type a brainstormed list of arguments that support your position.
2. Choose the three best arguments. These should be easy to support with details from the readings or from relevant personal experience.
3. Open up the Hand Out folder and drag over the persuasive organizer into My Documents.  Open up Power Point and then open up the document called persuasive organizer.
4.  Find the slide that says Opinion.  Type your opinion into this slide.

5.  Find the slide that says Reason #1.  Copy and paste your strongest reason into this section.  Find the slide that says Reason #2.  Copy and paste your second strongest reason into this section. Find the slide that says Reason #3.  Copy and paste your third strongest reason into this section.

6.  Begin to fill in the necessary details under each slide to support each argument. (You should be using your notes and referring back to the resources.)  Use the cut and paste tools to move your pieces of support around if necessary.  Remember bullets should not contain sentences, they are notes that you will extend on in your essay.

7.  Be sure to choose a background and add graphics.
8. Save your organizer.

Creating Your Persuasive Essay
1. Use the evaluation rubric to help you create a persuasive essay to present to the PTA.    Remember F-TAP! Use your slide show graphic organizer and remember to extend on some of the ideas.  Also remember that your essay needs to include 5 paragraphs!
