2009 - 2011 Maryland Physical Education Demonstration Schools

Every other school year, teams of professionals visit public schools who have applied to be a MARYLAND Demonstration School.  After a staff review of the school's program, and completion of the application, the team visits the candidate school and spends the day observing classes, looking at the curriculum, and evaluating the support of the school for the discipline of physical education. This program, originally started by MSDE and now totally funded by MAHPERD.

"We would like to congratulate Stone Mill Elementary School on being chosen as a Maryland Physical Education Demonstration School for 2009 - 2011 and by the nature of previous accomplishments becoming eligible for Honor Ross Status.  This is both an outstanding achievement and a wonderful honor!  This places you in an elite group that few qualify for.  You should consider your program as truly being one of the most outstanding in the state and be very proud of your accomplishment." says Andy Roper, co-chair of the Demonstration School Project.

The Demonstration School Winners will be honored at the Awards Banquet at the MAHPERD Convention in October, 2009, and will receive a plaque and banner to display.  They welcome visitors to their schools to see quality physical education in action.

Congratulations, Stone Mill Students!

 Jump Rope for Heart

Our Stone Mill youngsters and community again participated in Jump Rope for Heart!! Together, we collected $15,208.14!  All students in grades K-5 participated in the Jump, along with 47 parent volunteers. The event was held the week of March 2, 2009, in the school gymnasium.

All money collected was given to the American Heart Association’s cardiovascular research and educational programs. Thank you, Stone Mill Community, for helping to fight heart disease and stroke! A special "thank you" to our PTA President, Susan Bock, for guiding our parent volunteers throughout the week!

This year's event will take place on March 22 - 26, 2010.

I AM READY to raise money online for Jump Rope For Heart!

New Guidelines for Physical Activity

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued new guidelines for physical activity.

The guidelines are divided by different age and physical constraint groupings.  They are not a prescription but stress doing things that are fun and personally rewarding at the same time they meet goals for aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities.  As stated on page 3 of 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, "Physical activity gives people a chance to have fun, be with friends and family, enjoy the outdoors, improve their personal appearance, and improve their fitness..."

So who is being addressed by these guidelines? ... everybody.   These guidelines are an important step to the common goals of healthy bodies, healthy minds, and a healthy world.  To find out more on the new guidelines, go to www.health.gov/paguidelines.
