Instructional Roles:

Teacher: The teacher will provide background information on Spoon River Anthology and Edgar Lee Masters. He or she will guide students in
Library Media Specialist/Network Computer Specialist: The media specialist will work in conjunction with the teacher to prepare an html template for the posting of completed epitaphs on the Internet. The media specialist will give an introduction of how to use the template, and will assist the class as needed during the posting process. He or she will provide any necessary permission slips for posting.

Subject Integration Opportunities:

This project can easily integrate History and Art. History can be integrated as one of the poetic devices being taught is allusion. A teacher can ask that any allusions found be explained and documented thus integrating research/media skills as well. Art can be integrated by having students create a piece of work that would visually represent the poem being analyzed. There is room to add these on the web pages as currently designed on top of the page at the left.

Grouping:

The teacher shall decide upon the grouping- a suggestion is that all students work individually and skills students work in very small groups .

Activities:

Students view student examples of analyzed poems
Teachers assigns poems to be analyzed to students or groups of students
Students will summarize the content of their assigned poems
Students identify poetic devices used in their assigned poem
Students identify and explain any relationships evident in the poem
Students research any historical elements or persons alluded to in the poem.
Students analyze the implications of the character on himself, others, or society.

Evaluation:

A completed Poem Analysis page will be used to evaluate individual or small groups of students. Identification of literary devices, a thorough analysis of any relationships, and a discussion of the characters implications on himself, others, or society will be used in the evaluation process. Adherence to correct form, grammar and spelling will also used in the evaluation process.

Follow-up:

Identification of interwoven stories will occur
