Scholarships
Scholarships are advertised on the morning video announcements for a maximum of three days. Students are encouraged to visit the career center and check the scholarship bulletin board and the scholarship notebooks. These notebooks display a copy of all of the scholarships by due dates in notebooks organized by months starting with September.
Each senior has a scholarship card; to request a scholarship application, the student writes the name of the scholarship on the card and places the card in the request basket. In a day or less, the scholarship should be available for pickup. It is the students responsibility to pick up the scholarship application.

Scholarships are emailed directly back to students or are available as a download. For help on financial aid and scholarships, see nasfaa.org.
Remember, transcripts for scholarships are FREE, but all official transcripts must be mailed directly from the guidance office.

Gates Millennium Scholars
Students eligible must:
-Be of African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American descent
-Have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.00 scale at time of nomination
-Be a citizen/legal resident of the US
-Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibilty criteria
-Have demonstrated leadership abilities through community service, extracurricular or other activites

Mount St. Mary’s University Founder’s/Kuderer Scholarship essay competition
Announcing the Mount St. Mary’s University Founder’s/Kuderer Scholarship essay competition for outstanding high school seniors on Saturday, January 20, 2007 and Saturday, January 27, 2007. The founder’s/Kuderer Scholarship is a four year, full tuition scholarship, with an expected cumulative total value of over $90,000. Three students in the Mount’s incoming freshman class will each be awarded a Founder’s Kuderer Scholarship.
Norfolk State University Department of Engineering
Scholarships are available for high school and community college transfer students with a GPA of 3.0 or better, a combined SAT of 1500 or higher and / or an ACT of 22 for the engineering scholarships. The full scholarship program called the Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Sciences requires a separate application with a 3.2 GPA, 1500 or better on the combined mathematics, verbal and writing test and a 24 on the ACT. There are rolling deadlines of November 15, December1 and the final deadline is January 31 every year.
Sam Walton Community Scholarship
The Sam Walton Community Scholarship is a non-renewable $1000 award for the student’s first year of undergraduate study at an approved accredited college or university. To qualify, the student must be a graduating high school senior and may not be a Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. or SAM’S CLUB Associate, or the child or legal dependent of a Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. or SAM’S CLUB Associate.
The deadline for entry is a postmark of January 12, 2007.

College Scholar ($16,00-$22,000 per year)
- Winners are determined on the basis of overall academic achievement (GPA, ACT/SAT score, competition essay. Requirements: -3.5 GPA and either: 29 ACT, 1950 composite SAT (with 680 WR, 680 CR).

Clarence Beecher Allen Scholarships ($16,00-$22,500 per year)

Multicultural Scholarships ($11,000-$18,000 per year)
-Awards are made to African-American, Latino, Native American, and Asian American students on the basis of overall academic achievement.

National Wild Turkey Federation Scholarship
Due February 1st
Students need to be graduating seniors with a 3.0 or higher GPA who support the preservation of the hunting tradition and actively participate in hunting sports, as well as school activities. Students must also demonstrate leadership, community involvement and submit an essay, autobiography exhibiting dedication to conservation, three letters of recommendation from a teacher, counselor and community leader.
Each local winner will receive $250, state/provincial winners will receive $1,000 and the national winner will receive $10,000.
Johnson & Wales University

Ursinus College
The Tower Scholarship
Available to African-American and Latino students who have demonstrated academic excellence. Students must rank at least in the top 15% in their class and have SAT score of at least 1200.
Ursinus Admissions looks for students with a record of academic excellence and outstanding leadership from a verity of backgrounds. The search for exceptional historically underrepresented students is an important part of the college’s mission. Each year the college selects the most outstanding high school student from its pool of underrepresented minority applicants to compete for the Tower Scholarship.
Students seeking scholarships must have an admissions interview by February 15, 2007. Annual winners of the Tower Scholarship will receive: 1) $25000 scholarship, renewable for 3 years; 2) a 4 credit course with the summer Bridge program – a program geared towards helping African-American and Latino students become more acclimated with Ursinus; 3) additional research of internship experiences; 4) a Dell laptop computer.

US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce Scholarships
The US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce (USPAACC) is now accepting applications for the following scholarships:
Asian American Scholarship, Bruce Lee Scholarship, Drs. Poh Shien & Judy Young Scholarship, Ruth Mu-Lan Chu & James S.C. Chao Scholarship and the Telamon Scholarship.

Fleming Music Scholarship Fund
The 3rd Fleming Scholar will be selected in the spring of 2007 and will receive a $1000 scholarship to help support his or her continuing education in music. Students have the opportunity to compete in classical and jazz music styles in alternating years. The 2006-2007 competition will be judged on classical voice performance only, and the winning recipient will be presented to the public in the fall of 2007.
Gifted music students who are graduating high school seniors can apply for the 2006-2007 scholarship awards. The deadline for submission for the scholarship application and all other materials is February 28, 2007.

Bentley Systems, Inc. - BE Awards of Excellence Student Competition
The BE Awards of Excellence honor the extraordinary work of Bentley users improving the world’s infrastructure. The academic portion of the competition includes students form middle schools, high schools, colleges, and universities. It recognizes the innovative projects created by students using real-world professional software from Bentley to advance their studies in civil engineering, architecture, urban planning, mapping and GIS, facilities management, structural engineering, transportation, and more.
Each individual or team that enters will have the opportunity to create real-world infrastructure designs using the same software employed by professionals. Participants also will have the chance to win a BE Award and a $1000 scholarship, as well as a computer and Bentley software for their school.

Korean War Veterans Association
Each year Chapter 142 of Korean War Veterans Association, Frederick, MD. Provides two $500 scholarships for post-high school education, including trade schools. The applicant must be a direct bloodline relative of a Korean veteran who meets the membership requirements of the Korean War Veterans Association.
These funds are administered by the Community Foundations of Frederick County, MD. Maryland Farm Bureau 2007 Scholarship
The Maryland Farm Bureau will offer ten $1000 scholarships. Applicants must be high school seniors starting college in the fall of 2007 or full time college students at any community college of four-year institution. Applicants or their parents/guardians MUST be members of Maryland Farm Bureau. Seven of the scholarships will be offered to agricultural curriculum majors and three scholarships will be offered to non-agricultural or agricultural curriculum majors.
The Maryland Farm Bureau office MUST receive applications by March 1, 2007.

Select ONE of the following three topics:
1) The conventional view is that in life one can either achieve practical success or be moral, but not both. What view of this relation do you think emerges in The Fountainhead? What is the novel’s conception of success? Of morality? Explain by reference to characters and events of the story.
2) For each of the following quotations from The Fountainhead, explain its meaning in the story and its wider significance.
a) Gail Wynand (to Howard Roark): “There’s a particular kind of people that I despise. Those who seek some sort of a higher purpose or ‘universal goal,’ who don’t know what to live for, who moan that they must ‘find themselves.’” (Part IV, Chapter 5)
b) Peter Keating (to Dominique Francon): “I’d rather you’d express an opinion, God damn it, just once!” (Part III, Chapter 2)
c) Howard Roark (to Ellsworth Toohey): “But I don't think of you.” (Part II, Chapter 15)
3) In Roark's courtroom speech, he discusses the conflicts of the creator versus the second-hander and of egoism versus altruism. 2007 Folsom Scholarship
The Folsom Scholarship is a $5,000 scholarship awarded by Datatrac Information Services, Inc. to a Washington, DC-area high school senior who will be attending a trade school, two-year accredited institution, or certification/licensure program in his or her state of residence (exceptions made for those who live in Washington, DC). This scholarship is not available to students who will be attending a four-year program. Any application packets received that do not meet all eligibility criteria will not be judged.
Purpose: To provide financial assistance in the form of a scholarship awarded to a Metropolitan Washington, DC-area high school senior in recognition of his or her potential for success and desire to make a difference in the lives of others
Criteria/Requirements:
1. Past Performance:
• Must provide an official copy of your high school transcript
• Must provide two letters of reference from some combination of the following individuals (only two letters will be judged):
• Teacher/counselor
• Parent/guardian
• Community-based organization (i.e. non-profit, religious affiliation, volunteer organization,etc.)
• Personal reference (not a relative)
2. Statement of Financial Need: All applicants must include a statement of financial need (in their own words). This statement must address two elements: (1) Why does the applicant need these funds? (2) How has the applicant prepared for and envisioned meeting his or her college expenses?
3. Statement of Education and Career Goals: The applicant must provide a written statement of 500 words or less explaining what his or her personal goals are and how this educational opportunity will help make a difference in the community in which the applicant lives and/or works.
4. Letter of Acceptance: The applicant must provide a copy of his or her letter of acceptance from the issuing institution (must be a trade school, two-year accredited institution, or certification or licensure program, etc.) Four-year curricula students need not apply. Note that programs outside the applicant’s state of residency may be accepted if justified (i.e., program not available in state of residence).
5. Attendance Requirement: The applicant must attend a two-year program in his or her state of residency (exception: the District of Columbia).
6. Citizenship: The applicant must be a U.S. citizen.
Submission Deadline: All application materials must be postmarked by April 13, 2007.
Award Decision: No later than May 25, 2007
Award Amount: $5,000, paid directly to the institution the winner will be attending

for 4 years FREE. This is for MALES ONLY.
The "Call Me MISTER" program is a collaboration between Clemson
University, private, historically black colleges (Benedict College, Claflin University, and Morris College) and two-year technical colleges to recruit, train, certify and secure employment for minority males as elementary teachers in the public schools of South Carolina. Procedures for admission to the "Call Me MISTER " program are as follows:
1. Apply for and be accepted into one of the participating colleges or universities at which the degree and teaching certificate will be earned
2. Complete the Call Me MISTER online application <http://www.callmemister.clemson.edu/gettprog.htm>
3. Submit the following items:
* Two letters of recommendation:
1. one (1) from a teacher, guidance councilor, or
principal at the high school from which the diploma is earned

Bennington College
Eighth annual Young Writers Award competition.
Bennington has a long tradition of excellence in both creative and critical writing among both its faculty and student body. Out goal with this competition is to recognize outstanding writing achievement by high school students across the country. Students may submit work in one of three categories: Fiction (short story or on-act play), Non-Fiction (personal or academic essay), or Poetry.
Davidson College
Located in suburban North Carolina, Davidson offers 20 majors, ranging from Art to Sociology, along with activities, fraternities and sororities and so much more.
The John Montgomery Belk Scholarship awards one student almost $40,000 in tuition, fees and room and board, along with two summer stipends worth $3,000 over 4 years for varied opportunities, including international travel.
Harvard University
Harvard University has announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition.In making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said, "When only 10 percent of the students in Elite higher education come from families in lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution."
If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free ... no tuition and no student loans!
In addition, Harvard announces reduced fees for students from families with incomes between $60,000 and $80,000. Knoxville College Special Tuition Offer
Historically black Knoxville College in east Tennesse has reduced its tuition from $5000 to $1400 per student including room, board and books!

Skidmore College
Exciting merit-based scholarship program for student who excel in the sciences and/or mathematics. Skidmore awards five $40,000 scholarships ($10,000 per year) to students who demonstrate exceptional promise for study in these areas. These scholarships are awarded without regard to financial need. A faculty committee will choose the winners and inform them of their selection by April 1, 2007.
Susquehanna University
Students who receive scholarship are recognized for outstanding academic achievement, personal accomplishment and/or musical talent regardless of financial need. Scholarships are renewable annually and range from $4,000 to $64,000 over four years.
University of Maryland - Baltimore County
Meyerhoff Scholarship Program
The Meyerhoff Program is open to all high-achieving high school seniors who have an interest in pursuing doctoral study in the sciences or engineering, and who are interested in the advancement of minorities in the sciences and related fields. Award amounts range from $5,000 per year up to a fixed-dollar, four-year award covering incoming tuition, mandatory fees, room and board.
Requirements:
-Cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or above
-Minimum of 600 Math SAT score
-Aspire to obtain a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in math, science, computer science, or engineering
-Displayed commitment to community service

The Humanities Scholars Program
Seeks talented students who intend to pursue degrees in English, history, philosophy, ancient studies, classical or modern languages, linguistics or American or Africana studies. Program benefits include funding for a study abroad experience in the junior year.
The Linehan Artist Scholars Program
Brings together talent4ed students from the visual and performing arts disciplines: theatre, music, dance, and visual arts. Program benefits include special events drawing on the wealth of cultural and artistic resources that extend from Washington to New York.
The Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program
Supports students who are interested in developing a fundamental understanding of public policy and pursuing careers in public policy, government service, or non-profit sector. Program benefits include a faculty-directed internship in the junior year designed to explore the impact of policy related to the scholar’s academic work and intended career field
The CWIT Scholars Program (Center for Women in Information Technology)
Supports high-achieving undergraduate, both men and women, who plan to major in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, mechanical engineering, or another IT-related field. Program benefits include a mentoring program connecting scholars and IT professionals.
All bottom four scholarship programs offer four-year awards at two award levels. Selected full scholars will receive a fixed-dollar, four-year award covering incoming tuition, mandatory fees, room and board costs. Selected finalists will receive $5,000 per year if they are Maryland residents and $7,500 per year if they are out-of state students. See the Career Center for more information.

Creative and Performing Arts & Theatre Patrons Association Scholarships
- Have a minimum 3.30 unweighted/3.5 weighted cumulative grade point average (We will verify your scores with Undergraduate Admissions)

- Gain acceptance to the University of Maryland for the fall 2007 semester and register as a full time student, completing a minimum of 12 credits in that semester.
The auditions/interviews will be held on Monday, January 22, 2007 starting at 9:00 a.m. and ending about 4:00 p.m. We ask you to reserve the entire time period. One week before the auditions you will receive an email message with directions and more specific information. This is the only audition day offered; applicants must be in attendance to be considered.
