PSAT Information

The PSAT/NMSQT Program provides valuable resources that help students prepare for the SAT and take important first steps toward college. It provides 10th grade students with early feedback on academic skills they can work to improve and prepare for the college application process. Students who take the PSAT/NMSQT will receive free access to the following valuable resources:

• My College QuickStart™: a personalized online college and career planning tool that contains an online PSAT/NMSQT Score Report
• A customized My SAT Study Plan™
• Personalized lists of colleges, majors and careers, and access to MyRoad™
• Student Search Service®: a program that lets students receive free information from colleges, universities, and scholarship programs
• Score Report Plus: comprehensive skills feedback and suggestions for improving specific academic skills

The PSAT/NMSQT is a way to encourage your child to start thinking about life after high school. It will:

• help with curriculum planning to realize your child’s specific career goals.
• provide information and resources you need to help your child prepare to perform his or her best on the SAT.
• provide practical advice and online tools to find the right college for your child’s needs and goals.

College Process - Submitting Applications

Historically, the SAT (SAT Website) was the dominant test of the East and West coasts: the ACT (ACT Website) was the more common choice in the Midwest, but this is changing.

The gap between the number of ACT and SAT test-takers continues to narrow. Today there is a wider acceptance among schools of both tests. Every Ivy League school will accept both ACT and SAT, but all schools have preferences.

Differences

• The ACT is a content-based test; the SAT tests critical thinking and problem solving.
• The ACT includes a science-reasoning test; the SAT does not.
• The ACT math section includes trigonometry; the SAT does not.
• The SAT math question often combine several concepts; the ACT questions are more straightforward.
• The SAT tests vocabulary much more than the ACT.
• The SAT is not all-multiple choice; the ACT is.
• The SAT has a wrong answer penalty; the ACT does not.
• The SAT questions within a particular set appear in order of difficulty. This is not true of the ACT.
• ACT tests English Grammar, the SAT does not.
