2012 White House Science Fair

Jacen Sherman (Springbrook HS, class of 2014), has been selected, along with other recent student winners of major US science competitions, to attend the White House Science Fair this Tuesday (February 7).  The Fair will be hosted by President Obama. In 2011 Jacen won First Prize in Microsoft's "Kodu Cup" National Competition.

ABOUT JACEN:

Jacen is a 15-year-old honor student in the Academy of Information Technology and International Baccalaureate programs at Springbrook High School in Silver Spring, MD.  Inspired by many excellent teachers, and facilitated by magnet and signature programs offered at all levels in the Montgomery County Public School system, Jacen has developed a keen interest and aptitude in several aspects of computer science and software engineering. During his freshman year in high school, Jacen was encouraged by teachers to enter Microsoft's national Kodu Cup competition.  Working independently at home, Jacen learned and used Microsoft's Kodu programming language to create a save-the-world-with-technology game called, "The Vortex", submitted it to the Kodu cup competition, and was informed in June 2011 that he won First Prize.  Along with other prizes including a laptop computer, Jacen was flown to New York City to attend the 4-day long finals of Microsoft's "Imagine Cup" global competition for college-age students.  Jacen will attend the White House Science Fair along with over 100 winners of other major US science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competitions.
