To support the instructional program at Sligo Middle School

To provide students access to printed, nonprint and electronic resources to enable them to complete their research assignments. The Media Center also contains a wide selection of recreational reading materials that appeal to all.

To implement a research program that will provide our students with the skills needed to critically utilize information in an independent manner needed to pursue higher education.

To support the staff in presenting the curriculum.

To provide a facility that functions as an information center for the school

To provide physical and intellectual access to materials for the curriculum and for the needs and interests of a widely diverse middle-school student body and staff

To provide learning experiences that encourage users:

To access a variety of materials

To learn and practice higher order thinking skills (e.g., selecting appropriate materials, interacting with the material, analyzing content, synthesizing findings into a product)

To learn and practice critical skills (e.g., detecting bias, distinguishing between fact and opinion, determining reliability of a source, recognizing logical inconsistencies)

To plan with teachers for their instructional use of the media center

To provide guidance in instructional technologies

To encourage an atmosphere conducive to reading, learning, and research

To promote literacy and enjoyment of reading as well as informational retrieval and processing as a lifelong activity
