Spain and Portugal built rich empires in Latin America based on the labor of Native Americans and enslaved Africans.  During the colonial period, a rigid class structure developed in which a privileged few controlled economic and political life. As a result, many of the ordinary people of the region were very poor.  Groups and individuals wanted to improve the conditions where they lived, thus began the fight for independence in various countries.   

Directions: Students, you are to create a Glog documenting the independence movement for one of the Latin American countries listed below. Your Glog must include the requirements identified.    

Requirements:  

  • Name of country and map (3 pts.) 
  • Information about a person or group that worked/fought for independence.  
  • (6 pts.) 
  • Year the country won its independence (3 pts.) 
  • A brief description and video highlighting an annual independence celebration of the country (5 pts.)  
  • Information regarding a challenge(s) facing the nation in modern times. (4 pts) 
  • Note taking sheet (4 pts.)  
  • Citation Page (3pts.) 
  • All information must be historically accurate.
