Math at Sligo Creek ES

Math instruction at Sligo Creek also has two components, the classroom teacher and a full-time math coordinator. The classroom teacher provides instruction throughout the year using the new MCPS math curriculum, a concepts and computation based program in line with Maryland state outcomes and indicators. Grades 1 and 2 will fully implement the new math guides supported by the Harcourt Math program and other resources. Grades 3 through 5 will align instruction with the new MCPS guides supported by the Scott Foresman Math program. Most grades will have five or six units of instructions supported by manipulatives, curriculum, and training provided by the school system and supported by the math coordinator. Classroom teachers integrate math instruction with other subject areas.

The second math component is enrichment and remedial-based and is delivered by the math coordinator. Enrichment will be offered approximately three hours a month to small groups; one hour each to K-1, 2-3 and 4-5. Lessons will extend the topic being taught in the regular classroom. The Grade 5 students that are offered Math A at Silver Spring International Middle School will spend one math period a week in a math study period to reinforce or extend their current math unit. Remedial instruction will be for children falling below the expected MCPS percentile. Grades K-2 will meet on a two-week rotation, working in small groups from two classes. Grades 3 and 4 will be seen everyday and grade 5 will be seen four days a week.

The math program will also offer school-wide and grade specific activities, including Maryland Math Month, Family Math Night, The Maryland Math League Contest for all of grade 5 and a Math Olympiad team from grade 5. The Family Math Night offers hands-on activities for parent and child by invitation at a non-school based site. In addition to the above, the math coordinator will serve as a resource for all SCES staff to extend their skills and interest in math.
