The Academy Program

Tucked away in a tree lined area of Silver Spring, Sligo Creek’s Academy program supports a diverse population of Kindergarten through fifth grade children.  Sligo Creek’s neighborhood boundaries closely track the area around downtown Silver Spring, including Colesville Road and Wayne Avenue.  Our faculty and staff members have a strong commitment to teaching our Academy students who come from diverse backgrounds and speak a variety of languages, such as Amharic, Arabic, Burmese, Khmer, French, Rundi, Spanish, Swahili, Twi, and Wolof.  Sligo Creek is one of four elementary schools that feed into Silver Spring International Middle School and our students attend both Blair and Northwood high schools.

The Academy program features a focus on science and a devotion to ensuring that all students receive a rigorous instructional program in a respectful, nurturing environment.   We are located very close to Sligo Creek, one of Montgomery County’s most significant tributaries and our staff is able to take advantage of the creek to creatively foster scientific and biological curiosity among our students.  Our PTA sponsors a series of monthly science speakers, who tailor their presentations to the age of our students.  Recent topics have included: tornados, human brain development, dinosaur fossils, and primates.

At Sligo Creek, every child will be given the attention and focus needed to maximize his or her learning potential.  We want our students to feel valued, respected, and confident. We will focus on not only academic achievement but also interpersonal growth and values in accord with the Sligo Creek Way.  Our school is a motivating and enthusiastic environment that allows everyone to succeed, a result of structured teaching, guidance, and communication by the faculty and staff in partnership with the parents of each child.  Our parent volunteers provide crucial support to our efforts to make every child successful.  Each week, Sligo Creek parents come to our school to provide extra attention to the Academy students who need it, using activities and programs personally designed by our own reading specialist.
