2007/2008 SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS

Track and Field

Solomon Haile (Jr.) wins the 3200 meter run in the
Maryland 4A state finals in a record time of 9:22.44.
Arleigh Rose (Sr.) comes in second in both the
discus throw and shot put. (5/27/08)

Softball

The Warriors finished the season as state runner-ups,
after losing to Chesapeake on Saturday, May 24, 7-0,
in the 4A/3A state finals. Congratulations to the team for
a great season. They finished the season with a record of 18-3. (5/25/08)

Baseball

The boys baseball team won the 4A/3A state finals by defeating C.Milton Wright 7-6
on Friday, May 23. The team finished the season with a record of 17-5.

Volleyball (Coed and Boys)

The boys volleyball team won the Montgomery County Public School
Volleyball Championship on Friday, May 16, by defeating Rockville,
3 games to 1. The boys finished the season 14-1.

The coed team finished second to Damascus in the MCPS
coed championship. They finished the season 13-2.

Track and Field

Solomon Haile won the 5000 meter run at the Nike Indoor National Championships
on Saturday, March 15. His time of of 14:53.93 set the Prince George's Sports
and Learning Complex stadium record. He defeated runners from New York,
Pennsylvania, and California. He then joined with Russell Speiden,
Daniel Hausman and Kyle Balderson in the Distance Medley Relay,
where they placed 5th out of 14 teams. Their time earned each runner
All-American status from both Nike and Track and Field News. (3/17/08)

Wrestling

Steven Gamble (Jr., 152 lbs.) finished second in the Maryland State finals,
losing to Matt Cross of Bel Air. Steven finishes the season 36-1, and
is ranked 3rd in the area by the Washington Post. The Sherwood team
placed 13th in the team competition during the state finals.

Steven Gamble (Jr., 152 lbs.) won in his weight class during last week's
4A-3A West Regional Championships. Josh Lowy (Soph., 135 lbs), with a record of 29-6,
came in second behind Alex Tolbert (Sr.) from Magruder. Lowy had just beaten
Tolbert the week before in the county championships.
Both Gamble and Lowy will be participating in the state meet
this weekend at University of Maryland.

Swimming and Diving

The Washington Metro Championships were held on February 20-23,
and Sherwood's girls team finished 6th out of 36 teams, and the boys team placed
9th out of 33 teams. Heather Denman finished 5th overall in
individual scores, with Emily Ryczek placing 18th and Erin Stout 24th.
Eric Conrad lead the way for the boys finishing 20th.

During the Montgomery County Championships, which were held on
February 14-16, the girls team placed third and the boys finished third.
Leading the girls were Erin Stout (Sr.), who placed 6th in individual scores, followed
by Heather Denman (Sr.), who tied for 7th, and Emily Ryczek (Fr.),
who finished 13th. On the boys side, Eric Conrad (Soph.)
finished 9th and Mike Anderson (Soph.) placed 15th.

Indoor Track and Field

Russell Speiden (Sr.), Arleigh Rose (Sr.) and Kyle Balderson (Jr.)
all qualified to participate in the Maryland 4A state championships,
which were held on February 19.

Russell finished second in the 1600 meter run (4:27.11);
Arleigh finished third in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 2 inches; and
Kyle ran a personal best in the 3200 and finished fifth (9:54.52).

The Poms squad is undefeated in the Competition Season
after finishing first again this year in the County Champinships.
Deanna Solow (Senior) placed second for the Captain's Award. (2/19/08)

Wrestling

Steven Gamble (Jr., 152 lbs.) is currently ranked third in the
Washington D.C. area by the Washington Post in
his weight class with a record of 21-0. (2/8/08)

Fall Sports

Sherwood has been awarded the Fall Athletic Sportsmanship award
in five fall sports: field hockey, football, golf, boys and girls soccer, and girls tennis.
The sportsmanship award is given out every season by Montgomery County
in each sport and recognizes the school that displays superior sportsmanship. (1/31/08)

Baseball

Tom Gilchrist (Sr., outfielder/shortstop) was one of four Montgomery
County players recently named to the Maryland State Association of
Baseball Coaches' preseason All-state Team. The other three
players go to Damascus, Gaithersburg and Quince Orchard. (1/31/08)

Poms

The Poms squad finished first in Division I at the
Blake High School Competition meet on January 12, 2008.
Deanna Solow (Senior) placed first for the Captain's Award
and the team won the Best Choreography Award. (1/21/08)

Swimming

Heather Denman (Senior), has signed a Letter of Intent
with San Jose State in California, and is "expected to
have an immediate impact next year in the backstroke,
butterfly and lower middle distance freestyle events

Wrestling

Steven Gamble (Jr., 152 lbs.) is ranked second in the
Washington D.C. area by the Washington Post in
his weight class with a record of 16-0. He also won
the Arundel Holiday Tournament title in December
for 152 lbs. for the first time after coming in second his
freshman year at 130 lbs. and third last season at 145. (1/21/08)

 

FALL 2007

Cheerleading

Congratulations to the Varsity Cheerleaders for finishing second
in the 2007 MCPS Cheerleading competition on Saturday, November 17!!
Sherwood scored 411 points to finish behind Gaithersburg
in the Division I competition.
Clarksburg finished in third place.

Cross Country

Sherwood girls team tied for 7th with Gaithersburg in the
regional finals, but qualified for the last remaining
spot in the state finals on a sixth runner tiebreaker.

Russell Speiden and Kyle Balderson also
qualify to run in the State finals on November 10
because of their 4th and 16th place finishes
in the regional finals.

Kyle Balderson (Jr.) won the Triple Crown Racing Series
in the "Individual Boys" category. The Triple Crown tallied up the
results of three events: Great Meadows Race, the Oatlands Race
and the Octoberfest Race. Russell Speiden (Sr.) placed
third in the Triple Crown.

The Sherwood Boys Team placed fourth in the
Triple Crown Series
and the Girls Team placed fifth!

Football

Warriors lost in the 4A West regional finals to
Quince Orchard, 25-13, on Friday, November 24.
Sherwood finished the season ranked 13th in the area by the Washington Post.
Their highest ranking of 5th was during the week of November 19.

 

2006/2007 SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS

WINTER 2006/2007

Basketball (Boys)

Sherwood (23-4) is ranked 3rd in the Washington area
by the Washington Post in the final poll for the 2006/2007 season.

Warriors are Maryland 4A State Champions, beating Magruder 61-38,
at the Comcast Center on March 10, 2007.

Sherwood wins 4A State semi-finals against Glen Burnie, 58-44.
They will now face Magruder in the state finals on
Saturday, March 10, at the Comcast Center at 8 pm.

Washington Post ranks Sherwood 11th in Metro area (3/7/07).

Sherwood wins the Maryland 4A North Regional Title
by beating Blake, 72-71, in overtime. Sherwood will play
Glen Burnie in a 4A state semi-final on Thursday, March 8
at the Comcast Center, University of Maryland.

Warriors clinch the 4A East Division with win over
Magruder, 44-42. Washington Post ranks Sherwood 19th in Metro area.

Poms

Warriors' Pom Squad capture the Divison I-West title at the County Competition.

Swimming

Sherwood comes in 6th with 321 points in the Montgomery County
Public Schools Swimming and Diving Championships on February 17.
Quince Orchard came in 5th with 322 points, just one point ahead of Sherwood.

Sherwood swimmers win the Division II title, beating out Blair 809-728,
with Magruder coming in third at 665.

Wrestling

Andy Lowy (Sr., 130 lbs) won his third straight title at the
Maryland state wrestling championships on Saturday, March 3, 2007
by beating Timmy Lobuglio of Old Mill, 8-2. Rhett Beattie (Sr., 135 lbs) and
Steven Gamble (Soph., 145 lbs) both reached the finals, but lost to
Colin Leadbeter of Northern and Matt Jacobs of Dulaney, respectively.

Andy Lowy (Sr., 130 lbs), Rhett Beattie (Sr., 135 lbs) and
Steven Gamble (Soph., 145 lbs) all won individual titles
at the Montgomery County Wrestling Championships on February 17.
Alex Hakspiel (Jr., 112 lbs) reached the finals, but lost
to Damascus' Dan Lethbridge in a very close match, 6-5.

 

 

FALL 2006

Cross Country

Boys team finishes second in state finals at Hereford High School,
which has one of the most difficult cross-country 5k courses in the nation.

Football

Warriors finish the season ranked 8th by the Washington Post,
after losing to Suitland, 39-38, in overtime at the 4A state championship game.
Sherwood ends the year as the 4A state runner-up for the
second season in a row.

Volleyball (Girls)

Sherwood Girls win the State Volleyball Championship
in three straight sets against Damascus.


2005/2006 SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS

SPRING 2006

Gymnastics

Alexa Banda (Soph.) won the vault with a 9.0 in
the Montgomery County Championships. She finished in
3rd place in the all-around with a 36.125.

Lacrosse

Both boys and girls teams win 4A East Division.

Softball

Sherwood softball team wins 4A East Division. Pitcher Dana Ward (Jr.)
finishes regular season with over 200 strikeouts,
including pitching a perfect game in the last regular season
game against Churchill with 15 strikeouts.

Volleyball (Coed)

Warriors win the Montgomery County Championships in
a 5-set match against Blake. Finish the season 16-0.

WINTER -- 2005/2006

Wrestling

At the State Finals for 4A/3A, Andy Lowy is the State Champion at 119 lbs.
and ends the season undefeated at 34-0.
Steven Gamble went all the way to the finals at 130 lbs, but
lost in the Championship round
and is the State runner-up.

Alex Hakspiel (So., 105 lbs.), Andy Lowy (Jr., 119 lbs.) and
Steven Gamble (Fr., 130 lbs.) qualify
for the State Tournament, 3/3/2006 and 3/4/2006 at
University of Maryland Cole Field House.

Andy Lowy (Jr., 119 lbs.); Rhett Beattie (Jr., 125 lbs.) and
Steven Gamble (Fr., 130 lbs.).

FALL -- 2005

Football

Sherwood football team finished the 2005 season as the
Maryland 4A runner-up to Damascus.
Washington Post ranks Sherwood's team 6th in the
D.C. area with a final record of 12-2.

Varsity Cheerleading

Varsity Cheerleaders placed first in Division 1 of the
Montgomery County Cheerleading Competition.
Gaithersburg placed second and Damascus was third.

Cross Country (Boys)

Boys cross-country team comes in second, only three points behind Broadneck in the State Finals at Hereford. Five runners on the team place in the top 25: Chris Barnard (5th), Tommy Mullings (15th), Yared Tarekegn (19th), Russell Speiden (21st), and Matt Lowe (24th).

Soccer (Boys)

Boys Soccer Team wins Maryland 4A State Final with a 1-0 win over Broadneck. Final record for the season is 15-3-1.
Washington Post ranks the team 4th in the area.
