Sherwood Elementary School's students come from a large geographical area which includes many small communities, both rural and suburban. Although many families have been a part of the Sherwood community for many years, new housing continues to bring more families into the school. As we continue to grow, we will work together to maintain our sense of community spirit and our focus on academic excellence for all of our students.
Sherwood has many unique programs. We are one of only three Baldrige Quality Academies in the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). Teachers, principals, and parents visit our school to learn problem-solving strategies and planning models, and to observe classroom implementation of the Baldrige School Improvement process. The Sherwood Baldrige School Improvement Process leadership team includes representatives from our stakeholder groups. We meet monthly to discuss data, design and implement action plans, and monitor our progress.
Sherwood Elementary boasts a strong PTA with many parent volunteers assisting in classrooms, chaperoning on field trips, and assisting with special programs. Parents volunteer more than 8,000 hours each year. Sherwood Elementary is also fortunate to have groups of students from Sherwood High School, and other community volunteers who work collaboratively with staff to maintain a strong academic program.
Sherwood was one of the first schools in the county to implement the Home School Model which provides our special education students the opportunity to attend their local school instead of being bussed to another special education school. We have additional staffing and training to support these students’ unique needs. They are integrated into our instructional program and actively participate alongside their peers.
Sherwood continues to implement the revised MCPS curriculum through small group instruction. The Sherwood staff is experienced and highly trained. They strive to deliver a strong, balanced curriculum. Data on student performance is continuously reviewed and used to drive instruction. Staff members plan for the delivery of the curriculum in teams. Emphasis is placed on hands-on experiences for students in mathematics and science.
Other programs to support our curriculum include our Reading Initiative Program, Writers’ Workshop, a computer lab, the William and Mary Reading Program, Junior Great Books, and student journals and logs. Staff uses a variety of strategies to deliver instruction and to creatively challenge each student.
Sherwood families receive the Principal's Bulletin each week and grade level team letters each month to keep you informed about our school. If you have questions about our school, please call 301-924-3195.
