Graphical Calculator Information

A graphing calculator is required for classroom and homework in all Algebra 1 and some above mathematics courses. The following calculators are appropriate: TI-83, TI-83 Plus and TI-84, TI-84 Plus. We recommend that all students purchase his/her own calculator. If you purchase a new calculator, please buy a TI-84 Plus. The retail cost for this new calculator is approximately $100.00, although some local stores may discount the price. Do NOT purchase a TI-85; it does not perform some of the functions necessary for the mathematics curriculum. Also, the older model TI-81 calculators do not have all of the needed functions.

Geometry students (ONLY) can use the calculators listed above or any scientific calculator which includes the trigonometric functions – SIN, COS, and TAN. These calculators are available in many stores; they can be purchased for under $5 in many locations.

Calculator Loans

The mathematics department loans a limited number of calculators to students. There are TI-83 and TI-83 Plus calculators to loan on a first-come, first-served basis.

Calculators loaned to students must be returned at the end of the semester. If a student does not return the calculator, or the calculator is returned damaged they will be given a $100.00 obligation for the cost of the calculator.

In order to loan a calculator, please do the following:

  • The student and parent/guardian must fill out the Loan Agreement completely.
  • Bring the completed form to Ms. Thompson in the Math Office, Room 126.

If you have questions or concerns about the loan procedure, please contact Ms. Thompson at 301-353-8037.

Distribution of loaned calculators begins on the first day of the school year.

NOTE:  If the loan calculators are needed for the math high school assessment test(s), they will be collected the day before the test(s) is scheduled. The calculators will be returned the day after the test(s) are completed.
