ACADEMIC SUPPORT AT SENECA VALLEY... Teacher Support Most departments have staff available to help students during lunch. Students need a hall pass in advance to see a teacher for help during lunch. Some staff are available before school and after school as well. Students should check with their individual teachers about this. Mandatory Academic Support Teachers may issue Mandatory Academic Support forms requiring students to make up work or come in for extra help during the lunch period. There are two ways to get mandatory academic support:
Peer Tutors The National Honor Society offers help during lunch in Room 003 on Tuesdays and Thursdays in all subjects. Students should sign up in the Gudiance office the day before. The Spanish, French & Latin Honor Societies also offer tutoring. Check with Mrs. Awono to determine their times. The Science Honor Society offers help after school in room 232. Catapult Class: Guided Study HallStudents with less than a 2.0 GPA can enroll in a catapult class as one of their seven courses. Students work on assignments and receive specific tutoring in a quiet and supportive environment. Teachers serve as mentors for students and assist them in improving their grades. Mentoring Students are matched with a mentor who provides them with additional support. SISTERS and Man-Up are two of our mentoring programs. Contact an administrator for more information or to request a tutor for your child. Alternative Education Program An individualized program for students who have experienced a lack of academic success. The program is one period per day and focuses on respect, responsibility, rewards, realism, and results. It focuses on attitude, skills, and strategies to achieve academic success. Contact Ms. Runyon or Counseling Services/Guidance for more information. A new, free after-school program which allows identified students to recover lost credit for courses required to graduate or pass the Maryland High School Assessments. Asking the right questions can help improve your child's assignment grades. AT OTHER LOCATIONS & ONLINE... MCPS Saturday School
Parents who want extra help for their children in math, language arts, or reading are encouraged to sign up for Saturday School at one of 14 Learning Academy centers across the county. Though the program is open to all students who want to improve, it works to close the achievement gap that exists for African-American and Hispanic students. Operated by the George B. Thomas, Sr. Learning Academy, the program’s focus is on assisting kids with learning and studying strategies, providing mentoring, and enhancing academic performance. Sessions are held 8:30–11 a.m. from October through May. To register, parents need to provide a copy of last year’s report card and pay a $20 enrollment fee.
