Health Services

Phone: (301) 353-8010

Staffed by the Montgomery County Department of Health & Human Services.

Ms. Kimberly Allen, Registered Nurse
Ms. Sherri Marsh, Health Aide

  • Manages the care of ill and injured students.
  • Monitors immunization compliance and maintains student health records.
  • Administers medications and treatments.

The health room, located around the corner from the main office, is staffed by a full time community health nurse and health room aide. The health room serves as a place where students can seek first aid or emergency care as a result of injury or sudden illness. The nurse is also available for consultation and information on health matters and confidential support for family planning and pregnant teens.

Students are admitted to the health room with a pass from the teacher whose class they are leaving. There are no facilities for prolonged rest periods. Students who are unable to remain in school due to illness or injury may be sent home only after the nurse or aide has contacted a parent or responsible adult designated by the parent. As the school is unable to provide transportation home due to illness, students are advised to have the necessary funds to cover public transportation expense.

All students are to have on file in the health room a medical form completed by their physician. It is extremely important that a doctor’s certification also be on file if there is a health condition either permanent or temporary that would interfere with regular school activities. The nurse will not administer medication of any kind without appropriate authorization from a student’s parent/ guardian and physician. Students are to take any required medication to the nurse and report to the Health Room to receive the proper dosage.

Elevator Use for Physical Limitations

Elevator keys are available for students who have a temporary or long-term physical limitation which impairs their ability to go up or down steps. In order to receive a key, the student MUST present a note from a physician to the school nurse explaining the need and estimating the period of time the key will be required. A note from the parent/guardian stating that they know that they will have to pay a $35.00 replacement fee if the key is lost must also accompany the doctor’s note. These keys cannot be replaced by ordinary methods.

ONLY STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN ISSUED AN ELEVATOR KEY ARE ALLOWED TO USE THE ELEVATOR! NO FRIENDS ARE TO ACCOMPANY THEM. THE KEY IS TO REMAIN SOLELY IN THE POSSESSION OF THE STUDENT TO WHOM IT WAS ISSUED!

Students should contact the counseling services office for an application for home and hospital teaching when absence from school is anticipated for at least one month due to illness. (1) The counselor will complete the top portion of MCPS Form 311-15.  (2) The parent will take the form to the doctor's office for verification of illness and time lost from school.  (3) The parent will return the completed form to the counselor.  For more information, please see the MCPS Home and Hospital Teaching webpage
