Physical Education

Hello, we are Sarah Starr and Michael Gillen the Physical Education teachers here at Carl Sandburg. Below is a short description about the Physical Education program in place her at Sandburg and the goals that are in place FOR EVERY STUDENT.
 

Students at Sandburg receive Physical Education classes twice a week. In addition to that, students on our Primary team take part in an additional large group enrichment class once a week with a major focus on building social skills. Intermediate team students receive an opportunity to take part in our Enrichment activities. The Enrichment activities are held at the end of the school day, three days a week. The Enrichment activities that we off her at Sandburg are:

  •  
  • Basketball (Sept-Oct)
  • Volleyball (Nov-Dec)
  • Dance (Jan-March)
  • Soccer (April-May)
  • Track (May-June)

The curriculum that I use is the MCPS Physcial Education curriculum and I also follow NASPE (National Association for Sport and Physical Education) Standards. I also look to improving the following three areas for my students during my lessons:

  1.  
  2. Creating and improving motor skill development. (Kicking a ball, skipping, shooting a basketball, etc...
  3. Improving and/or maintaining a healthy fitness level. (Jogging, making proper nutrition choices, aerobics, yoga, etc...
  4. Improving social skills. (Taking turns, following game rules, playing games appropriately with others, etc...
