Homework Policy

Homework is one of the many activities in our students’ total school life. It reinforces and extends practice of skills and concepts addressed instructionally. Homework is designed to collect evidence of student understanding and application of what has been taught. Students are responsible for completing their homework in a timely manner. Homework also promotes positive habits of learning in our students.

The Rosemary Hills Staff recognizes the importance of time for family, learning and growing. Children also need time to participate in child-oriented activities that are fun and educational.

Well-designed homework assignments involve the following principles:

Assignments provide opportunities for practice of content and skills and their purpose is well defined and clear to the student.
Directions are clear, concise and related information sources are provided.
Assignments are related directly to instructional objectives.
Assignments account for individual differences among students.
Assignments are varied to challenge student ability.
Homework should be returned by the due date.

The amount, frequency and difficulty of homework is flexible. Students and parents work together in setting time limits. Setting a specific time and place for homework will assist your child in developing positive, life long learning skills. The maximum times are:

Kindergarten 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times weekly
First Grade 15-20 minutes, 3-4 times weekly
Second Grade 20-30 minutes, 4 times weekly

In addition, children should be read to or read independently for at least fifteen minutes a night. Also, if incomplete classwork becomes homework, that work does not fall under the maximum time guidelines.

Special Considerations:

If a student is unable to complete the homework or does not have an adequate understanding of the work, the parent should write a note to the teacher explaining the difficulty or reason the work was not completed. Please contact your child’s teacher first if you have any questions or concerns.
Timely completion of homework assigned for practice will be reported in the Learning Skills part of the report card
Homework will not be assigned to interfere with designated religious holiday observances.
Students that miss class or homework assignments due to absence will complete their work within two to three days after they return.
Students going on a family trip during the scheduled school year will be given classwork assignments and homework upon their return.
