Questions about foreign language credit in high school
On Friday, November 30 th, 2007, Rosa Parks Counseling Services kicked off the career lunch presentations called “Take a Bite Out of a Career”, where groups of 20 students per grade enjoyed their lunches as they listened. Ms. Veronica Everett, the marketing specialist for Montgomery Hospital, and the parent of a 6 th and a 7 th grader at RPMS, introduced our first speaker on MEDICAL CAREERS, Ms. Katie Robinson, the new manager of physical rehabilitation at MGH.
Students learned that there is a big demand for careers in the medical field, from EMT (emergency medical technician) to MD (medical doctors). Medical people practice in a variety of settings, from hospitals to schools, to medical clinics and offices. And each specialty requires certain training, and in general, the more training required, the bigger the salary earned. Some specialties in the broad field of medical careers are technicians (requiring high school and some additional training and certification), nurses (varying amounts of training), physical therapists, and doctors (from college plus 6 years and more).
Ms. Robinson advised any student interested in a medical career to invest in taking lots of science and math courses, to study and get high grades in school, and to volunteer in order to get experience to clarify which career to pursue. Students received MGH bags full of goodies, including a brochure about medical careers.
