Model United Nations (Model UN) at Rockville High School is a group
of high school students who participate in conferences, generally
around the D.C Metropolitan Area, simulating the real United Nations.
The goal is to help students better understand world issues and
to discuss how to approach theses issues in a peaceful way.
Usually
in conferences, each school is designated a specific country or
countries and then it is further divided among each
group member into different committees. In each session, they
discuss current topics facing the United Nations that may include
issues from piracy to health epidemics. Assemblies at the conferences
may include: the General Assembly, the Security Council, and
the World Health Organization.
Each student represents a specific
country; therefore, students must research and know the positions
of their country on various
issues and topics in order to successfully participate in the
conferences. Participation in the conferences exposes students
to the world of politics and international relations. Students
will learn various legal terms used in the conferences including:
caucus, points of motion, and quorum. They will also have an
opportunity to practice their public speaking skills and write
their very own position paper and resolution. Model UN not only
helps students further their knowledge of international affairs,
but also proves how much fun debating can be, while meeting people
from around the world with different backgrounds and different
cultures, and most importantly different point of views.
We here
at Rockville have participated in various conferences including
TechMUN in Northern Virginia, CUMUNC at Catholic University
of America, and one held at The George Washington University
in the District of Columbia. Our main goal this year is to host
our first annual RockMUN conference for local high schools around
us in hopes of strengthening our own Model UN program.
Laura Li is a avid member of the Model UN club. She is responsible
for maintaining the Model UN page on the RHS site.
