Gompers
Samuel Gompers - leader of AFL,
practical & conservative, refused to allow immigrant & unskilled
workers into his union, preferred negotiation to use of strike, rejected
radicalism
William Green - Gompers' successor
as leader of AFL in 1924
Uriah S Stevens - organized Knights
of Labor in 1869
Terrence V Powderly - leader of Knights
of Labor, allowed all workers to be in his union, frowned upon using strike
Eugene V Debs - remembered as most
prominent Amer socialist, formed Socialist Party and ran for prez 5 times,
leader of IWW, very radical - urged strikes & violence

Daniel DeLeon - leader of radical
Socialist Labor Party which remained on extreme left wing of American labor
movement, quarreled w/ other Socialist leaders & failed to help unite
labor movement
Mother Jones - radical dressmaker who
attacked moderate labor leaders, legend of working class
Big Bill Haywood - presided over IWW
& attacked AFL
Henry Frick - manager for Carnegie
responsible for violence at Homestead
Adolph Strasser - moderate leader of
Cigar Makers Union
