OVERVIEW OF THE TIME PERIOD:
During the time period between 1875 and 1925, labor unions played an increasing role in American society. The American Federation of Labor had its roots during this era, as well as the Knights of Labor and the International Workers of the World. Though they greatly differed in ideaology and tactics, these unions all worked to gain better conditions for millions of American workers. These unions worked for shorter hours, higher wages, greater benefits, and better treatment of women and children. The important rights these unions gained for the working class laid the foundation for union work today.
