Media Center Mission
Our Media Center is a people place and a center for many learning activities. Students, parents and staff are encouraged to browse, read and sign out books and materials. Classes visit the LMC to choose books, view videos, hear stories, search for information on topics and learn on our computers in the Learning Research Hub.
Media Specialist Roles
The media specialist is a teacher, an instructional partner with the staff, an information specialist and a program administrator. The media center is at once a library and a hub of information found through the internet, on video and audio tape, over educational television and in print sources. I evaluate and order materials, teach staff and students how to access information sources and how to choose the best resource for their purpose. I support the curriculum with technology, information sources and instruction. Our goal in the media center is to promote leisure reading and a love of learning. Details of the four roles of the media specialist can be found at http://www.mcps.k12.md.us/departments/media/programs/roles.shtm.
Hours of Operation
The Media Center is open for staff from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and for students from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Student Checkout
Most student materials are checked out for two weeks and must be returned before more books can be checked out. Students in Pre Kindergarten and Kindergarten may check out one book at a time while First to Fifth graders may have two books. We will check an extra book out to students for a special project with the teacher’s authorization.
Scheduling
Classes are seen on a fixed weekly schedule in PreKindergarten and the five Learning Center classes. Kindergarten and First grade classes are also seen on a fixed weekly schedule and Second through Fifth grade classes are seen on a flexible schedule. Teachers plan with the media specialist to integrate information literacy skills into the grade level curriculum.
