Principal’s Message

Recently, I was reading some literature about effective ways to create and sustain a Peaceful School Environment and read a quote that I would like to share with you.

“The thing above all, that a teacher should endeavor to produce in … pupils if democracy is to survive is the kind of tolerance that springs from an endeavor to understand those who are different from ourselves.”  -- Bertrand Russell

This really resonated with me as I reflect on all the special qualities of RCV and some current events within our school.

  • Last week, we enjoyed a wonderful International Night and this week we had an Parent Meeting to offer parents of children who experience English as a second language, an opportunity to discuss how they can continue to support their childrens’ academic success in school.
  • This week, several of our students initiated some charity efforts to reach out to our school community to collect needed supplies for the NICU at Shady Grove Hospital and also the local Humane Society.  You received fliers about these charity efforts in the quarterly information distribution this week, and I am hopeful that many of you will be able to support these efforts with a donation brought to school and placed in boxes in our atrium which will be available throughout the month of February.
  • On Monday, we will have our PEACE assembly and celebrate students throughout our school who have demonstrated helpful and cooperative behaviors with peers and teachers over the last quarter of the school year.

All of these are examples of how we are not only nurturing bright and talented students, but also encouraging the tolerance and generosity throughout our community that will ensure our students grow to be confident, thoughtful, compassionate, and tolerant citizens.  Thanks to all of you for your partnership in sustaining our peaceful school environment here at RCV and I hope that many of you will be able to join us for our PEACE assembly on Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. to celebrate the continued accomplishments, “put ups” and hard work of our students.

Kids on Campus at Howard Community College

Howard Community College is offering summer enrichment classes for kids ages 7 to 16. Registration for these classes begins February 8. Change of School Assignment (COSA) for Middle School

If you have a child who is currently in 5th grade at RCV, and is attending school here on a COSA, you will have to reapply if you would like them to go to Wood Middle School next year. The window for turning in a COSA for next year is February 1 to April 1, 2012.

Kindergarten Orientation

This year we will be having Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday and Friday, April 12 and 13. There are two days this year due to the current high enrollment in Kindergarten .  On these two days there will be NO SCHOOL for current Kindergarten students.

Students must be 5 on or before September 1, 2012 in order to enroll in Kindergarten for the coming year.   If you have further questions, please contact Marie Williamson or Heather Harman in the Main Office at RCV at 301-460-2195.

Below is a form to fill out and return to Rock Creek Valley with some information about your new Kindergartner. This information will help ensure that we are able to get Kindergarten Orientation information mailed to you, and also to help with enrollment.

*If you know of a neighborhood kindergarten child, please pass this on to them*
