Book Check-Out Procedures

At Rock Creek Valley Elementary School we are committed to providing a safe and caring learning community where staff works proactively to motivate and engage all students to put forth their best effort in order to achieve success.

As long as the students do not have any overdue books, they may check out the following number of books:

 Kindergarten  - 1 book
1st and 2nd Graders - 2 books
3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders - 3 books

Books are checked out for a two week period.

3rd, 4th, and 5th graders may check out one magazine at a time.

Students in all grades can come in at any time during the school day to return, renew, or check out materials as long as they have permission from their classroom teacher.

Black-Eyed Susan Book Award Program

The Black-Eyed Susan Book Award (BES) is a children's choice book award for the state of Maryland.  The award honors outstanding picture books and chapter books – each year 15 picture books and 10 chapter books are nominated.

Students get to pick the winning books in each category by voting for their favorite. In order to vote for their favorite book, the students must have read or listened to at least 8 of the 15 nominated picture books and/or at least 3 of the 10 nominated chapter books. Voting takes place in the middle of April.

The Media Center will have multiple copies of each book for students to check out.  Many of these books are also available in the public library. The BES program is a voluntary program.

Volunteers

Volunteers are always welcome (and strongly needed!) in the Media Center! Please call or stop by and visit

if you are interested.

Special Occasion Book Club

The Special Occasion Book Club is a great way to help us add to the Media Center’s collection while at the same time celebrating a birthday, holiday special achievement, or to show teacher appreciation.

For a minimum donation of $10.00 your child will select one of the Media Center’s new books. A bookplate will be placed inside the front cover identifying the student and the occasion being celebrated. The student is then the first person to check out the book. Once it is returned, the book becomes available for general circulation.

Special Occasion Book Club forms are available from the Media Center.
