Message from the Principal

In just a few days, February will begin – a month that has been designated as National Black History Month.  Though not specifically addressing the importance of reflecting on the history of equality within the United States and beyond, I thought that the following quote reminded me of the importance of our work with our students – those of all races -- and the crucial role that we play in ensuring future equity and equality for all children.

“Of all the civil rights for which the world has struggled and fought for 5000 years, the right to learn is undoubtedly the most fundamental.  We must insist upon this to give our children the fairness of a start which will equip them with such an array of facts and such an attitude toward truth that they can have a real chance to judge what the world is and what its greater minds have thought it might be!”           - W. E. B. DuBois (1949)

We continue to strive to give all of our students the facts and attitude spoken about through the reinforcement of high expectations and the use of equitable practices at RCV .  We  believe that all our students can not only grow to judge the world, but also to become the great minds of the future.

The Parent Academy has Something for Everyone!

The Parent Academy workshops give parents the tools and strategies they need to help their children be successful in school.   All workshops are FREE and held at schools and locations throughout Montgomery County.  Workshops in “Everyday Reading”, “Communicating Effectively with School Staff”, “Special Education:  the IEP Process”, “Communicating with your Child’s Teacher”, and more will be offered during Winter 2010.  More information will be coming home with your children.  To view the courses online, visit:

Wood Open House

Wood MS will be hosting another open house for parents of 5th Graders on Wednesday, February 3, 2010.  The Open House will run from 8:15-12:30 p.m.  with an initial meeting in the Media Center followed by tours and visits to various classrooms.

Mad Science Begins March 3, 2010

It’s time again for Mad Science!  Classes will begin on March 3, 2010 for both Kindergarten-2nd and Grades 3-5.   Flyers and registration forms will be included in the children’s Friday folder on January 29th.  The deadline for registration is February 17, 2010.

Upcoming Kindergarten Parent Tours

There are two separate school tours for parents of children who will be attending Kindergarten next fall.  These tours will be held on February 19, 2010 and March 19, 2010. The tours are for parents ONLY.  Each tour will start at 10:30 and last for approximately 30 minutes.  In addition, new Kindergarten students and their parents will attend kindergarten orientation which will be held in late April.  If interested, please call the main office at 301-460-2195 to sign up for a tour.

Out-of-Area Transfer Requests, Gr. 5 Students

If your 5th Grader is attending Rock Creek Valley on an out-of-area transfer, please be reminded that you need to reapply for another transfer if you would like your child to attend Wood Middle School.  Transfer requests will be accepted by MCPS February 1 through April 1, 2010.  All transfer requests and supporting documents must be submitted to your child’s “home” school, NOT  Rock Creek Valley.

Career Day at RCV

We are looking for volunteers to speak at RCV Career Day on March 22, 2010 from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.  If you or any of your acquaintances would be willing to speak at RCV’s Career Day,  please e-mail:

Mrs. Valle @ Gail_N_Valle@mcpsmd.org by February 5, 2010.  Please include your name, phone, best way to reach you, e-mail, grade level you feel the material is most appropriate for, and children attending RCV.  Each speaker will make three 25 minute presentations throughout the afternoon.

2010 Kindergarten Orientation

This year’s Kindergarten Orientation for RCV will be held on  April 23, 2010.  Students must be five years old on or before September 1, 2010.  If you have a child who meets this requirement, please complete the information below and submit it to the office or contact Marie Williamson, RCV registrar at (301) 460-2195.  If you know of a neighborhood kindergarten child, please pass this on to them.
