Summer Camps at Parkland
Video Production Summer Camp
Do you want to learn the difference between a close-up and a wide shot? The significance between shooting a high angle or a low angle? How to add music and video together? How to create new and exciting videos? Sign up for Video Production Camp! Students will earn about all aspects of production from camera work, audio synching, using a green scree and much more. During the week students will spend time creating an original and unique video presentation that will be posted on Parkland’s Youtube channel. This camp is open to all rising 6th through 8th grade students.

Cross Country, Track & Field, Flag Football Camp
This is a one week co-ed camp focuses on general training for cross country, track and field, and flag football. It will culminate in Friday races and competition. Recommended for all rising 6th – 8th graders interested in cross country, track and field, and football.

Chinese Food and Culture Camp
This is a one week camp that focuses on Chinese culture, games and food. This class is open to all students regardless if they have registered to take Chinese language class in the fall. Recommended for all rising 6th grade students.

Astronomy Camp
This will be a hands-on exploration of Astronomy, for first-time astronomy campers at Parkland, where campers will be doing activities that connect to current space missions and learning about topics that real astronomers are investigating. Campers will use telescopes for observations along with online data from spacecraft. One or more field trips will be planned, with one being a full day trip to a space museum on Wednesday, July 16. (Campers must be dropped off at 8:30 am with a bag lunch and picked up at 2:00 pm that day). The camp will include a nighttime observation party (if the sky is clear) with telescopes for campers and their families at a location away from Parkland Middle School (campers must have their own transportation and be accompanied by an adult).

Leadership Camp
This is a one week camp that focuses on leadership skills and team building activities. Students will participate in a variety of group and individual exercises designed to bring out leadership potential. Focus will be on teamwork and achieving a common goal, so a service project will be decided upon by the group. This group is recommended for students in SGA and opened to students with all leadership experience. Field Trip: TBD on Friday.

Learners Today… Leaders Tomorrow
This is one week course will focus on an introduction to Science and Aerospace, study skills, time management and daily middle school routines. This camp is structured and recommended to help acclimate rising 6th grade students to Parkland Magnet Middle School.

Intro Robotics Camp- Structure and Mechanical Systems
This week long session will focus on using teamwork to analyze common materials and decide how to use those materials to build both non-moving and mechanical structures. Students will construct mechanical hands called “end-effectors” and learn how to modify the end-effectors to perform a variety of common tasks.

August 4 – 8, 2014

Advanced Robotics Camp- Design and Programming
This week long session will require students to build a variety of motorized Lego based projects. Students will explore the use of gear ratios, sensors, and programing to achieve the goals for each project. (Previous experience with Lego toys is useful, but not required.)

Stepping Stones to Your Future Camp
This one-week commuter camp is
designed for rising 7th and 8th grade students to perform
fun science experiments and engage in engineering challenges that tap into
their creativity and problem-solving skills. This camp is an excellent
opportunity for middle school students who are interested in science and
engineering to work with current University of Maryland students to discover
how much fun engineering is, and how strongly it shapes the future.
