MMYC Opportunities- Free FAFSA Workshop and More!

MMYC - Silver Spring office will be hosting a FAFSA workshop for students to learn about FAFSA and actually complete the FAFSA application online! The workshop will be hosted at our MMYC - Silver Spring office location (8700 Georgia Ave suite 500, Silver Spring, MD 20910) on Thursday, February 26th starting at 2:30 PM. Food will be provided and spaces are limited, so we are asking that any students interested in attending contact me as soon as possible to RSVP! (Staff and/or students can fill out the attached referral intake form and fax to: 301-585-0115 or email to: a.mons@layc-dc.org).

Note: Due to schedule conflicts, if students are still interested in attending but would have to arrive late due to the time they are dismissed from school, this is perfectly fine. I will be conducting the workshop and will be able to accommodate them accordingly.

This is also a wonderful opportunity for students to enroll in any programming that we have to offer, including:

Microsoft Office Certification: Youth can participate in workshops designed to teach students to be proficient in operating Microsoft Office products. Stipends of $200 are provided to youth who pass the certification exam. Available to in-school and out-of-school students.

Paid Internships: MMYC hosts a summer internship  serving between 50-100 youth. Placements are determined based on youth career interest. Internships may occur and are offered as they become available year round. Stipends are provided to youth who participate. Available to in-school and out-of-school students. Must contact Outreach and Retention Specialist as soon as possible if interested.

Post-Secondary Exploration Workshops: Workshops are catered to students seeking career guidance/counseling to a post-secondary education (FAFSA, scholarships, college enrollment). Available to in-school and out-of-school students.

GED Program: We offer GED classes to students ages 16 - 21 who are residents of Montgomery County. Classes are Monday through Thursday. Our next cohort starts January 12th. Students must complete enrollment process before this date in order to be part of the next cohort.

Conservation Corps: Youth gain hands on experience working in County and State parks while studying to attain their GED. Five month program also includes job readiness training, life skills, and case management support.

STRIDES: A program offered exclusively at our Germantown office; this program provides students with job readiness skills and college readiness skills as well. Services include assistance with financial aid, assistance with college applications, college tours, job readiness and professionalism training, etc. [Flier attached] (Note: Students interested in this program and/or students who reside closer to our Germantown location (12900 Middlebrook Rd., Germantown MD 20874) can  fill out the attached referral intake form and fax to: 240-777-2070 or email to cintia@layc-dc.org)

I have attached a flier for the event next week as well as a one-pager about programming that we offer in Montgomery County and a checklist of documents that we collect for enrollment into our programs. Although we do require certain documents for funding purposes, all of our services are absolutely FREE for all of our clients and families.

In addition, the Maryland Multicultural Youth Centers will be hosting our annual Let's Get It Started! Youth Job Fair on March 21st! This year, the event will be held at the Silver Spring Civic Building from 11 AM to 2 PM. (Flier attached; please also feel free to visit the Let's Get It Started Youth Job Fair event on Facebook).

Not only is this a great opportunity for youth ages 16 - 21 who are seeking employment, but in addition, the first 50 youth to pre-register online will be invited to exclusive Job Readiness workshops that Silver Spring office staff will be facilitating in order to give a more focused preparation to some of the youth.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in contact with me; I can be reached  via email or at 301-495-0441 ext 224.

Thank you!
