School Hours

School hours are 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please do not drop students off before 9:05 a.m. Teachers are not in their classrooms until that time and students may not be in the building unattended. The only exception is the students who may enter the school at 9:00 a.m. to eat breakfast in the cafeteria.

Students that walk to/from school are dismissed at 3:25 p.m. Students that ride in cars are dismissed at 3:28 p.m., and students who ride the bus home are dismissed at 3:30 p.m.

The lunch/recess schedule to accommodate all the students is as follows:
11:30 -12:25 Kindergarten
11:50 - 12:45 - Grade 1
12:25 - 1:20 Grades 2 and 3
1:00 - 1:55 Grades 4 1nd 5

In the event that your child stays to participate in after-school activities, please arrange to pick him/her up immediately after the activity ends. The teacher day ends at 4:00 p.m. and students may not remain in the school without a responsible adult.

If your child attends before-school activities, please do not drop him/her off before the specified time, as he/she may be unsupervised.

Early Dismissal (Scheduled half days)

  • Half-day dismissal is at 1:00 p.m. for grades K-5.
  • Lunch will be served at school and there is no recess.

Attendance

Parents are responsible for informing the school when a child will be absent for any reason. Please call the school office at 301-924-3126 between 8:00 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. A written note explaining the absence must be sent with your child when he/she returns to school or the absence will be considered "unexcused".

When a child arrives at school after 9:15 a.m., he/she must go to the office before going to the classroom. Parents are expected to accompany students to the office to sign in.

There will be times when it becomes necessary to have your child dismissed before the end of the school day. Please send in a note that states what time you will pick up your child. Parents need to report to the office and the secretary will call for your child. The student must be signed out at this time. Going directly to the classroom to pick up your child is not permitted. Please note that students will not be called to the office for early dismissal after 3:15 p.m. except in emergency situations.

Please avoid planning vacations on scheduled school days. The State evaluates and grades each school on the attendance records.

Snow Days, Delayed Openings & Early Closings

When it becomes necessary to close school because of snow, inclement weather, or other emergency conditions, announcements will be broadcast on local radio or TV stations. A delayed opening decision is made by 6:00 a.m. Early dismissals are determined by 11:00 a.m. PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL . You can call (301) 279-3673 for the MCPS recorded message or check online at www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org.

Radio stations (WMAL, WTOP) will also have the latest information. You may also register on www.schools-out.com or get MCPS QuickNotes for an e-mail notification when schools are delayed or closed for any reason.

The following times reflect any changes in school openings or closings due to inclement weather or catastrophe:

Two Hour Delayed Opening:

  • School begins at 11:15 a.m.

Two Hour Early Closing:

  • Grades 1-5 dismissed at 1:00 p.m.

Please go over emergency plans with your children. In the event of an early closing, children need to know where to go and who is responsible for them. In the event day care facilities are used, inform children of alternate plans if these facilities also close early.

Bus Change

When your child arranges to go home with a friend, he/she must have a written note giving him/her permission to ride a different bus. The note must first be shown to his/her teacher, and then to the bus driver. This can only be done if there is extra seating on the bus.

Use Of Telephone

Students are allowed to use the telephone for EMERGENCY CALLS ONLY . Forgotten items from home, or requests to go to a friend's house are NOT emergencies. If parents need to deliver forgotten items, please bring them to the office. The child will then be called or someone in the office will deliver the item(s) to the classroom. Adherence to this policy will minimize classroom interruptions.

School Visits

Montgomery County Policy states that when parents visit the school, they must go to the office first. Any conferences with staff members should be scheduled in advance. Parents should not request to confer with teachers during class time, nor should they go directly to classrooms during the school day.

Any parent helping in his/her child's classroom or elsewhere in the school MUST sign in, in the volunteer logbook, and pick up a volunteer identification badge in the Office. The badge must be worn at all times while in the school. To help ensure the security of our children, this rule will be strictly enforced.

Security

To help us secure the building during the day, all outside doors will be locked after 9:30 a.m. except the main front doors. All visitors are to enter the school through the front doors.

All visitors must wear a guest identification badge or a volunteer badge.

School Lunches

Prices are as follows:

  • Lunch $1.85
  • Milk $0.40
  • Reduced Lunch $0.40
  • Chips $0.65
  • Breakfast $1.00
  • Cookies $0.25
  • Reduced Breakfast $0.30

Lost And Found

When items are found at school, they should be brought to the Lost and Found located in the All Purpose Room. Parents are advised to put their child's name on articles of outer clothing, lunch boxes, backpacks, etc. This will help to insure that any found items are returned to the right person.

Medication

If a child requires medication during school hours, the parent and physician must first complete an authorization form (MCPS 525-13). For emergency medications, such as for bee stings, this form should be completed at the beginning of EACH school year. NO medicines of any kind are to be sent to school with a child. Parents must deliver any prescribed or over the counter medicine to the Health Room.

If a child is hurt or becomes ill at school, the parent will be called. If the parent is not at home/work, the emergency number on the yellow card will be called. The child should then be picked up as soon as possible. Please remember to keep phone numbers updated on the yellow emergency cards.
