Aluminum Repousse by 4th graders
Repousse: Is the action or the artwork of decorating metal surfaces with designs. The designs are pushed into the metal from the back by hand. Gold and silver are used by most artists, but copper and tin will also work. Bronze was the metal used for repousse in the past. This process of decorating metal has been used by artists for over 1000 years!

4th graders in the classrooms of Ms. Flory and Mr. Greenman tried their hand at a very old craft: repousse. The reason we wanted to explore this craft was to learn more about drawing. We usually use color to identify different shapes in our drawings. Exploring repousse forced us to use different kinds of lines to represent different parts of our compositions.
Students first composed a drawing of a person, place, or thing that they wanted to transfer to metal. We then practiced various marks on metal. Finally, we transferred the drawing onto metal and added lots of tooling. Tooling is making marks with a tool of some kind, we used pens and nails.
Afterwards, we made a cut aluminum ornament, decorated it with tooling, and colored it with permanent marker.
