Third Grade Repousse

Repousse: Is the action or the artwork of decorating metal surfaces with designs. The designs are pushed into the metal from the back by hand. This process of decorating metal has been used by artists for over 1000 years!

3rd graders in the classrooms of Mrs. Gale and Ms. Zamora tried their hand at a very old craft: repousse. People all over the world have made hammered decoration on metal. We looked at artwork from the Inca in South America. The Inca worshipped the sun and made many sculptures and masks about the sun. Many of these were made from gold and used the repousse technique. Students drew a face with a headdress of their own design. The technique we used is “reverse repousse,” because we drew in the metal, instead of hammering out the metal from behind. The results and learning is the same: beautiful design in the metal. We added color with permanent marker.

Originally, we were going to work in clay. However, after two of Ms. Leckie’s clay faces blew up in the kiln, she reconsidered and the classes worked on metal. The objectives of the lesson remained the same: facial proportions and decoration with pattern, line, and color.
