S P A C E – The 3rd Dimension
Landscapes by 4th Graders

This lesson involved learning about the ways that artists use to represent depth of space in a flat, or 2-dimentional artwork.  Artists try to make their artwork look as if there are some shapes appear closer to the viewer, and others farther away.  Of course their artwork is flat, but still there appears to be depth of space.
Artists use a combination of these three methods to represent depth of space:

Landscape

1.  Overlapping shapes:  This means that in the artwork we cannot see all of each shape, some parts are hidden by other shapes.
2.  Different sizes and amount of detail:  This means that in the artwork shapes that appear closer to the viewer are large, while those that appear far away are smaller; those shapes that appear closer have more details, those that seem farther away have fewer.
3.  Placement on the page:  This means that in the artwork shapes that appear closer to the viewer are near the bottom while those that appear farther away are near the top.
