Still Lives by 2nd Graders

What is a still life?
It is a kind of artwork that has been done by artists for hundreds of years.   It is a picture of something, or a number of things, that don’t move: they are still.
One famous American artist is known for his still lives of desserts: Wayne Thiebaud.

Student Work - Still Life with Desserts

We decided to use Mr. Thiebaud’s work as starting point for our own still lives.
Our still lives started by drawing 4 -6 desserts in pencil and then carefully coloring them with oil pastel.

Next we worked on the background.  We divided our background into two sections: the surface that the desserts are sitting upon and the vertical space behind the desserts.  Each student designed 2 different patterns for the two parts of the background.  To make the background softer, we colored over the patterns with one color.
