Mission
Statement:

To establish an environment that will provide students and staff full access to the information and resources that they need to support the curriculum, as well as to foster a love of literature and learning.

Facility and Resources

Collection
Our large collection of print and non-print items has been selected to support the curriculum as well as student free choice reading.    The collection also includes a large number of professional materials to support our faculty and staff.   During the 2008-2009 school year the Oakland Terrace Media Center circulated more than 16,000 items.

Online Resources
Montgomery County Public Schools provides students home use access to a number of subscription online resources that are available here at school.  A link to these resources can be found at:

For home use password information to these subscription resources, please contact the Media Center staff.

Technology
Our Media Center currently houses eight computers that are available for student and staff use, in addition to a dedicated Patron’s Catalog computer and administrative computers.  The Media Center also houses a Promethean Board and Elmo document camera.

A separate Computer Lab containing thirty-five computers is located next door to the Media Center and is available for student research projects on a flexibly scheduled basis.

Instructional Program and Scheduling

Instructional Program

The Media Center’s instructional program centers around three main areas of focus.  Examples for each area are listed below:

Information literacy skills instruction: Collaborative research projects.  Defining topic.  Evaluating appropriate print and electronic resources for research.  Search strategies.  Citing sources.   Using multimedia to produce a project.

Literature:  Differentiating between fiction and non-fiction.  Connecting to our diverse world through folk tales, non-fiction and biography.  Supporting character education through literature. Author and illustrator appreciation.

Library Citizenship
:  Book Care.  Patron’s Catalog instruction.  Respecting intellectual property.  Internet Safety.

Scheduling

The Media Center instructional program is based on a modified flexible schedule:

Kindergarten:  Weekly classes
Grades 1 and 2: Bi-weekly classes
Grades 3, 4 and 5:  Flexibly scheduled classes

In addition to whole group visits, individual students who have their teacher’s permission are welcome to come to the Media Center to research or exchange library books at any time during the school day.

Circulation and Lost Book Policies

Student Circulation Policy

Students in Kindergarten may check out one book for one week.
Students in grades 1 and 2 may check out one book for two weeks.
Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 may check out two books for two weeks.

Lost Book Policies

Oakland Terrace students are taught to be good library citizens and to respect and care for their borrowed items and return them by their due date. At the same time, we recognize that library items can occasionally become lost.  In that case, it is our policy to request reimbursement for the original cost of the item.  In the event that the item is later found and returned in good condition, we will refund the full amount of the lost item payment.  Please contact the Media Center staff for more information.
