Counting
Indicators:

6.K.1.2 write and count (using 1 to 1 correspondence) with whole numbers to 31 or beyond.
6.K.1.1 model single digit numbers in a variety of ways.
6.1.2.2 count by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 100 and by 2’s to 20.

Students in Ms. Thompson's class order the numbers 1 through 20. The numbers have been written in permanent marker on unifix cubes. The activity reinforces one-to-one correspondence and helps students to recognize the written form of a number. The activity also is a great concrete introduction to the concept of the number line. The activity can be differentiated by putting fewer numbers in the bag (1-10) or more numbers in the bag (1-31). Students could be challenged by only receiving some of the numbers (10-20 or 15-30). Finally, students could receive unifix cubes of two colors: odds in orange and evens in yellow. Then, when asked to count by twos, the student could simply read the yellow numbers.

Although many students in Kindergarten can count, often they have simply memorized the numbers in order. After the single digit numbers, many students do not truly appreciate the size of numbers. This activity allows students to see in a concrete way that a number like 20 is much larger than 11.
