Grade 4 Unit 2/Grade 5 Unit 1 ~ Graphing Functions

Graphing Functions
Students used the geoboard to represent the relationships between familiar units of measure. The area of the entire geoboard represents one gallon. The student has written the conversions, all of which can be determined from this simple visual, on the top of the paper. The student has also related the units of measure to fractions of a gallon.

Graphing Functions
The student has created function tables, converting between units. From a function table, it is easy for studetns to come up with an equation to represent the conversion.
Q: How do you move from gallons to quarts?
A: gallons x 4 = quarts, or 4g = q. When the letter substitutions are meaningful (g for gallon; q for quarts), students understand the substition of a letter for a value.

Graphing Functions
Finally, the student graphs the coordinate pairs found in the function tables. Notice that the student has written the conversion equations on the lines: 16 x g = c, 4 x q = c, etc. It is useful to discuss with students the reason why the slopes of the lines vary.

Indicators:

1.4.1.2 complete a function (one-step)
table using a given rule.

1.5.4.1 represent relationships using graphs and tables.

1.5.1.3 write the rule for a given function (one-step) table

1.5.5.1 identify and graph points using ordered pairs in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane.
