Tessellate Your Teacher
Students use the Photodraw Program to Tessellate their teachers. Tessellations are designs in which "tiles" are transformed to cover an entire surface without overlapping. These tessellations involve translations (sliding a figure on a plane, like in the design above in which Ms. Fields has been translated); rotations (as in the design below in which Ms. Flory has been rotated 90 degrees); and reflections (as in the design at the bottom in which Ms. Apo has been reflected horizontally.

Here are the tiles the students tessellate:

Tessellations
Some geometric figures can be transformed many different ways and still result in a tessellation.

Tessellations
When students are challenged to tessellate two tiles, they must
reflect some tiles which they did not need to reflect originally.

A copy of this file can be found in the OT Handout folder/ 4th grade/ Math/ tessellate or in the Staff-Shared folder.
Indicators:

2.4.4.1 identify and describe transformations: translations (slides), reflections (flips), and rotations (turns).
