| Grade 4 Unit 5 ~ Converting Customary Units / Capacity |
|
![]() |
Students in Ms. Shuster's class use a geoboard to convert between customary capacity units. The entire geoboard represents one gallon. Students then partition the geoboard to explore the relationship between gallons, quarts, pints and cups. The student work here shows that 4 quarts = 1 gallon; 8 pints = 1 gallon and 16 cups = 1 gallon.

Using the geoboard,
the student easily converts into cups and determines that the amount
showing on the left is less than the amount showing on the right.

![]() Notice all of the equivalent ways the student has expressed each capacity before comparing them.
