Comparing Decimals
Comparing Decimals

Ms. Apo's students use tenths and hundredths grids to represent decimal values. It is important that students create visual representations of decimals so that they understand decimal place value. It is counterintuitive to students that 0.6 and 0.60 are equivalent, but the pictures make it clear.

Students should always state decimal values correctly in order to reinforce their understanding of decimal place value. 0.6 should not be stated as zero point six, but as zero and six tenths, as the students have written in these examples.

Comparing Decimals
Students use pictorial models to depict decimal inequalities.
