Polygons
Identifying and classifying polygons based on their attributes is a vital skill. Students must become familiar with categorizing polygons in order to succeed in higher level math. In later grades, students discover the formulas for finding the area and angles of different polygons. Classifying polygons in earlier grades leads to a better understanding of the shared attributes of different types of polygons later on.

In third grade, students are responsible for recognizing the attributes of quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons. It is important that students see and construct polygons other than regular polygons in which the sides and angles are all the same.
Students first constructed polygons on geoboards. They then transferred them to geodot paper. Students see that polygons are defined by their attributes: a hexagon has 6 sides and 6 angles. Hexagons can look very different. Students should have an opportunity to see other students' examples to see the wide range of polygons that fall under each of the categories. Indicators
2.2.1.1 describe and classify plane and solid geometric shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, sphere, pyramid, and rectangular prism) according to such attributes as the number and shape of faces, edges, and vertices.
2.3.1.1 identify, describe, and classify polygons, including pentagons, hexagons, and octagons.
