Transformations: Slides, Flips and Turns
Geometric figures transformed on grid paper: slides, flips and turns Geometric figures transformed on grid paper: slides, flips and turns
Students create simple geometric figures on graph paper. They then perform the three basic geometric transformations: slides, flips and turns. Notice that the flips show the line of symmetry, also known as the line of reflection. In fourth grade, the transformations are referred to by the terms translations (slides), rotations (turns), and reflections (flips). Some students can perform the transformations visually. Others need objects, such as cubes, to manipulate in order to see the transformations.

Students who were particularly adept at transformations then used linker cubes to make simple solids that they then transformed in three dimensions and drew on isometric dot paper.

Students also used the online geoboard to represent three dimensional figures and then transform them, in this case, flipping the figure.
