Geometric and Numeric Patterns
Third grade s tudents in Ms. Kim's, Ms. Sullivan's and Ms. Zamora's classes make growing geometric patterns with pattern blocks. They then connect the geometric pattern with the numeric pattern (the number of blocks), which is important to move students from a concrete understanding of patterns to an abstract understanding of patterns. These types of patterns prepare students for functions in fourth and fifth grades. These students' designs grew by 3 blocks each day.

patterns

Below are more increasing geometric patterns created by Ms. Sullivan's and Ms. Kim's Classes. Third graders must identify how much their pattern increases, which the students have marked on their papers. Students in Ms. Flory's Math 5 class, use the third graders work to create function tables and to come up with equations to represent the patterns.

This pattern increases by 2. However, the first day starts at 7. The equation the Math 5 students came up with: y = 2x + 5.

Geometric Patterns
This pattern increases by 3 each day.
The equation is y = 3x.

Geometric Patterns

Function Table
A student in Math 5 makes a function table to show the number of blocks in the pattern created by the 3rd grader (to the left). The student then writes the equation for the pattern: y = 8x.

Geometric Patterns
Both this pattern and the pattern to the right increase by 3. Students in Math 5 must find similarities and differences between different patterns. The patterns are similar in that they increase by 3. They have different starting points, however.

Geometric Patterns
The equation for the pattern on the left is
y = 3x
The equation for the pattern on the right is
y = 3x +1

Writing Expressions for Geometric Patterns

Math 5 students reviewing 3rd grade work.

Students from Ms. Flory's math 5 class record function tables and equations for the geometric patterns created by 3rd graders.
