Transformations: Slides, Flips and Turns

2 images of Ms. Dann with a construction hat on. The image has been slid to the right. The student has written, "I know it is a slide because the hats are on the same side. The hats stay the same. She was on the left and I slid her to the right."
Students use the Publisher program to perform geometric transformations on their teachers. This student has slid Ms. Dann. The students then must explain how they know the image has been slid.

2 images of Mr. Moxley with a propellor hat, one pointing up and one with the image turned to the right. The student has written, "I know I turned Mr. Moxley because his hat is crooked. The hat pointed up and now it points to the right."
The hats have been added to the images to allow the students to see and explain the transformations more clearly.

2 images of Ms. Fordham with a witch's hat, one pointing to the left and the other to the right. There is a line of symmetry between the two images. The student has written "I fliped Ms. Fordaham to the right. I can tell because her hat is faceing the other way. The line of symmetry is like a miror."
The flip is the only one of the transformations that results in a line of symmetry. This activity is a great way to introduce and reinforce geometry vocabulary.
