Number Patterns on a Number Line
What Does This Look Like In:
K 1 2 3 4 5 A B

A number line with 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30 colored purple
In this Kidspiration Activity, students relate the geometric and color patterns they have been completing in their earliest schooling to number patterns. This pattern starts at 2, adding 4 each time. Students can visualize with this activity that every fourth number will be colored in. The number pattern is then extended past 14 to 18, 22, 26, and 30 by following the pattern.

Numberline with 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28 colored purple.
The patterning could be related to patterning from Kindergarten and grade 1. This pattern is an purple, white, white pattern, or an ABB pattern. Relating the number pattern to what is a strength for many students in the earlier grades makes number patterns more accessible and less abstract.

A numberline with 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29 colored purple.
In this example, a decreasing pattern is given, starting at 29 and decreasing by 4. It is important to get students to extend patterns, and to explain the rule. This pattern starts at 29 and decreases by four.

Indicators:

1.1.1.1 recognize, describe, extend, and
create repeating patterns using models.

1.2.1.1 recognize, describe, extend, and
create repeating and increasing patterns using models and numbers.

1.2.1.2 use patterns to continue numerical sequences and identify the rule.
