Students in Ms. Coughlin's class explore three activities that show addition and subtraction as inverse operations. Above, students illustrate a fact family in Kidspiration using fruits and vegetables. They write the four number sentences that go with the picture. Below, students illustrate fact families using unifix cubes, ten frames and twenty frames. The more students can relate addition and subtraction as inverse operations, the better they are at solving many types of word problems. Fact families also allow many students to master their basic addition and subtraction facts better than if addition and subtraction are taught in isolation. |
