Grade 1 Unit 1 ~ Skip Counting
What Does This Look Like In:
K 1 2 3 4 5 A B
Paint prints of hands show a model for skip-counting by 5

Students in Ms. Doona Kim's class skip count by fives by using the fingers on their hands as models. Skip counting is a basic introduction to number patterns and to multiplicative thinking. Conceptually, a student needs to understand that when they are counting by five, they are grouping five things together, like the fingers on their hands.

Students in Ms. Bensman's and Ms. Callahan's classes model skip-counting by 10 using the toes on their feet.

Students should also explore skip-counting with other numbers besides 2, 5, and 10. The more students master skip-counting by 3s and 4s and 6s, the more ready they are to master their multiplication tables in later years.

Students should also explore skip counting on hundred charts and number lines.

Indicators:

6.1.2.2 count to determine the number of items in a set (1s, 2s, and 5s to 30, and 10s to 100) using various methods.

1.1.1.1 recognize, describe, extend, and create repeating patterns using models.
