Welcome to the Oakland Terrace Writing Salon!
The Oakland Terrace Writing Salon provides an opportunity for the Oakland Terrace Community to see student writing from different grade levels. More importantly, the salon provides a forum for our young writers to share their ideas. Students know that their writing will have an audience that includes the school community as well as the entire world through our website. There is no greater audience than that! Come back often to see the new writing featured in the salon.

Peace is not loud, but soft like slow waves and dark green grass.  Just like music, soft music.  It’s like the dark sunset, not like the bright yellow day sun.  The birds are not chirping, people not talking.  It’s just quiet.  That’s why it’s peaceful.  The skies are blue like it is raining.  My collage is dark like a rainy day.

Color Poem ~ Blue

Blue is the wave that smashes against the coarse shore.
The color of the stone rich ladies wear on their rings is blue.
When I lose a soccer game I am blue.
When you are blue you are trustworthy.
The color of rain that falls in April is blue.
It is the color sky on cloudless days.
Blue is the color of the bird that sings merrily in the backyard.
It's the color of taxi cabs that speed around on the roads.
The color of your toe when you break a bone is blue.
Blue is the peace in this world slowly edging away.
Blue is one of the tricolors on our flag waving freely.

Creatures Past and Present
An Autobiography of My Love for Animals

Introduction

For as long as I can remember I have loved animals.  I have had some interesting and odd encounters with them that have made a big impression on my life.   Sometime during my life my love for animals changed from an interest to a care and compassion.  My interest also included prehistoric beasts and gradually became a career choice.

The Salamander

When I was four years old my family was taking a walk at Lake Needwood.  It had recently rained so the ground was covered with mud and the air smelled wet.  As we were walking I kicked over a rock just in time to see a small black tail wriggle into the mud.  Before it disappeared I grabbed it and pulled out a small lizard.  I called after my parents.  My brother Jonah wanted to touch it but my dad told him not to.  I felt proud there holding this tiny creature.  Dad said that it was a salamander and that they usually lose their tails on purpose in incidents like that.  That was just one of several experiences I’ve had with animals ...
