Poetry ~ Grade 3
Read poetry written by third grade students.

Haiku:
Haiku is a Japanese poetry form. It is commonly taught that haiku is three lines long of five, seven and five syllables. Instead of focusing on syllables, these students focused on sensory imagery and word choice. Each haiku creates an image of a scene or event in nature.
Shining Pond
Shining in the warmth
A small fish jumping so high
Fell down, "splish, splish, splash"
Grass
Swaying in the wind
Listen to the soft whistle
Peacefully watching

The Moon
Light bright what a sight
Shines down like a beautiful
Light bright ball, the moon

Autumn Leaves
Autumn leaves fall down
Golden sunlight memories
Look! A leaf floating
Blizzard
Wind Snow Blizzard
Windy Nippy wooooshing snow
It can knock you down
Butterfly
Beautiful colors
Landing gently on flowers
Wings are red orange
Snow
Snowflakes have fallen.
Silence fills the lonely woods
As I quickly go.
Spring
The spring rains have come
Giving life to many plants
And ending winter.
Sunset
A beautiful sun
Setting behind the seashore.
Violent colors.
Beach
Seeing the starfish.
Hearing the rough sand blowing.
Touching the rough shell.
Storm
Dark, gray clouds up there.
Powerful wind hits the earth.
Disaster on land.
Clouds
Fluffy, puffy clouds
Floating in the sky today.
High up in the sky.
Plum Blossom
Cool, peppermint smell,
Plum blossom snowflakes falling.
Spring will come once more.
Cherry Blossoms
Nice, fluffy white clouds.
Snowflakes fall slowly at night.
Sweet perfume surrounds.
Plum Blossom
A small plum blossom
Smelling of peppermint sticks.
Feeling of soft silk.
Cherry Blossoms
Silent white flowers
Surround me with lovely spring.
Only whispering.
Cherry Blossoms
Cool, fluffy white clouds.
Petals of snow smell so nice,
Just like sweet perfume.
Rhyming Couplets

When students write poetry, they often focus simply on rhyming, with little attention given to the meaning of what they are writing or the rhythm of their words. These students wrote rhyming couplets that also make sense and that flow.

My Tree

I like my tree. It is so high
It almost touches the sky.

Bright red, orange, green and brown.
The colors are admired by the town.

My tree is so tall.
It makes me feel very small.

I saw a crazy goat,
She wore a purple coat.

Her coat had golden buttons,
She belonged to Mr. Nuttkins.

Mr. Nuttkins had a cat,
His goat really loved that!

When Mr. Nuttkins feeds her jelly,
The cat licks her belly.

Mr. Nuttkins has a dog,
And a big fat smelly hog.

The goat thinks and thinks,
She decides the fat hog stinks.

Bt the goat likes the dog,
'Cause he wasn't a smelly hog.

Coconuts

Cool sphere and full with milk
On the palm tree, smooth as silk

Coconuts are so, so soft
On the palm trees, they will loft

Nice and white and very cool
Underneath the dark brown pool

Terrific, fuzzy, tickly, too
Scents of icky, gloppy glue.
