Reading to Perform a Task ~ Grade 3

It is important for students to see all types of texts, including directions and instructions, also known as procedural texts. Procedural texts often contain many text features that students need to evaluate. Studying this type of text readies students for a lifetime of reading directions, a skill that is used nearly everyday as an adult. It is important that students read, evaluate and follow directions. This page includes examples of students in third grade reading to perform a task during a mini-unit in which Ms. Gale, Ms. Kim, Ms. Fields, Ms. Sullivan and Ms. Zamora rotated classes the week before winter break. The activities were fun for students as they provided opportunities for students to work cooperatively and individually to follow instructions.
