In the past, Ms. Apo has run the student recycling program at Oakland Terrace. Now, Ms. Lyons has taken over the task. Fourth grade students collect recycled paper products from every class room and every office several times a week.
During the 2006-07 School Year, Oakland Terrace initiated No Waste Wednesdays. Each week, a grade was in charge of helping students recycle materials during lunch times. Materials were rinsed and so that trays, aluminum foil and milk cartons could be recycled. Students learned how to separate their recycling. On a typical day, over 700 students at Oakland Terrace generate 17 bags of trash just during lunch. On NO WASTE WEDNESDAYS, the number of bags of trash fell to just 3!
